The Cruel Prince by Holly Black — A Dark, Addictive Fantasy Review (4.5★)

If you love sharp-tongued characters, dangerous court politics, and a romance that feels more like a knife fight than a love story… The Cruel Prince absolutely delivers.

This was one of those books that pulled me in slowly—and then completely refused to let go.

✨ Overall Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

🌿 The Premise

The story follows Jude Duarte, a mortal girl living in the High Court of Faerie after the brutal murder of her parents. Raised among fae who despise humans, Jude is determined to carve out power and belonging in a world that constantly reminds her she doesn’t belong.

And at the center of that world? Cardan—cruel, sharp, and impossible to ignore.

🖤 What I Loved

1. A morally grey heroine (finally).
Jude is not your typical fantasy protagonist. She’s ambitious, ruthless, and willing to make questionable choices to survive and rise. It’s refreshing—and honestly kind of addictive—to follow a character who isn’t trying to be “good,” just powerful. Including at the cost of her family.

2. The political intrigue.
This is where the book really shines. The court dynamics, betrayals, shifting alliances—it’s messy in the best way. You’re constantly second-guessing motives and trying to stay one step ahead.

3. The atmosphere.
Holly Black creates a faerie world that feels enchanting but also deeply unsettling. It’s beautiful, yes—but also sharp, dangerous, and unforgiving. Exactly how fae should feel.

4. The tension between Jude and Cardan.
This is not soft romance. It’s slow-burn, enemies-to-something-more, layered with resentment, power struggles, and moments that make you go wait… what was that? The chemistry is subtle but intense.

⚔️ What Didn’t Quite Hit 5 Stars

1. The pacing at the beginning.
It took me a little while to fully get into the story. The first portion leans more into world-building and setup, which might feel slow if you’re expecting immediate action.

2. The romance is very subtle (for now).
If you’re going in expecting a heavy romance, this might not fully satisfy—at least in this first book. It’s more tension than payoff.

🌙 Final Thoughts

The Cruel Prince is a dark, twisty fantasy that leans heavily into power, survival, and ambition rather than traditional heroism. It’s not cozy, it’s not soft—and that’s exactly what makes it so compelling.

If you enjoy:

  • morally grey characters

  • court politics and betrayal

  • enemies-to-lovers tension

  • darker fae worlds

…this is absolutely worth picking up.

And that ending?
Let’s just say I immediately needed the next book.

Would I recommend it? 100%
Will I continue the series? Already mentally there
