Bride by Ali Hazelwood - Book Review

Going into Bride, I was excited to see what Ali Hazelwood would do with paranormal romance. Vampires, werewolves, political alliances, and a marriage of convenience sounded like the perfect recipe for a fun romantasy read. While there were definitely aspects of the book I enjoyed, it ultimately didn't fully capture my attention the way I had hoped.

The story follows Misery Lark, a vampire who agrees to marry Lowe Moreland, an influential werewolf Alpha, in an effort to maintain peace between their two species. As expected, the arrangement quickly becomes more complicated than either of them anticipated, forcing them to navigate trust, secrets, and growing feelings for one another.

One of the strongest aspects of the novel was the humor. Misery's narration is witty and often genuinely funny, and there were several moments that had me laughing out loud. Her dry observations and awkward interactions helped keep the story entertaining, even during slower sections.

Unfortunately, the overall plot felt somewhat flat to me. While there were interesting ideas throughout the book, I never felt fully invested in the central conflict or the romance. Certain developments seemed predictable, and I found myself waiting for the story to reach emotional heights that never quite arrived. The chemistry between the characters had its moments, but I struggled to connect with them on a deeper level.

Another thing that occasionally pulled me out of the story was the language. There were scenes where the dialogue or narration would suddenly shift into highly technical terminology that felt out of place. For example, a conversation might begin discussing a biological concept in a relatively casual way, only to abruptly introduce complex medical or scientific terms. While I understand Hazelwood's science background often influences her writing, these moments felt jarring within the flow of the story and sometimes disrupted my immersion.

That said, Bride is still an enjoyable read for readers looking for a lighter paranormal romance with plenty of humor, an interesting supernatural world, and a marriage-of-convenience storyline. It just didn't deliver the emotional depth or excitement I was hoping for.

Overall, Bride was a solid read with some genuinely funny moments and an intriguing premise, but the story never fully came alive for me.
